Measuring SEO results
Which numbers show whether SEO is working, how to read ranking changes without panicking, and how to report progress to a client or a boss.

SEO takes months, and rankings move every day. Without a clear way to measure, it is easy to either give up too early or keep doing something that is not working. Measure the few things that connect to customers.
Start from the business goal
Rankings are a means, not the end. Decide what a win looks like:
- Phone calls and contact form enquiries.
- Quote requests or bookings.
- Sales, for a shop.
Set these up as goals in your analytics so every other number can be traced back to them.
Organic traffic
Visits that arrive from unpaid search results. Look at:
- Trend over months, compared with the same period last year for seasonal businesses.
- Landing pages: which pages bring searchers in. A page that ranks but gets no visits usually needs a better title and description.
- Conversions from organic visits, not just the count.
Rankings and visibility
Checking one keyword's position is misleading: it moves daily and depends on location and device. Better measures:
- Visibility: a score combining all tracked keywords, weighted by how many clicks each position typically gets. Moving from 11th to 9th matters far more than from 45th to 30th.
- Distribution: how many keywords sit in the top 3, 4 to 10, and 11 to 20. Keywords in 11 to 20 are the nearest opportunities.
- Biggest winners and losers: the handful of changes that actually moved visibility.
Rank tracking reports all three.
Technical health
A site health score from a regular site audit catches problems before they cost rankings: a developer's noindex left on, a broken redirect after a redesign, a plugin that slowed every page.
Links and mentions
Track the links you win and lose, and the Site Strength of your domain over time. Expect these to change slowly.
AI visibility
Track visits from AI assistants and whether they name you for your key questions. See AI search.
How long to wait
- Technical fixes and title changes can show within days to a few weeks once pages are re-crawled.
- New pages usually take weeks to months to settle.
- Competitive keywords and links take months.
Judge a change after enough time for it to be crawled, and look at trends rather than single days.
Reporting
A useful report answers three questions: what changed, why, and what happens next. Lead with enquiries and organic traffic, then visibility, then the work done. Client reports build this into a branded PDF on a schedule.
